Just a quick survey,
Curious as to whether anyone thinks their AS may have been triggered by standing on sea urchins ?!
Strange question I know - but I have a theory ...!

Stood on a sea urchin in Greece, 1968, but don't think any relation to developing AS... Not too many spines to remove, but was painful. And very much doubt that many KAers have stood on sea urchins - a handful mebbe? No possible relation I would have thought! What's yr theory?

Having just done a quick search on sea urchin injuries, they sound painful! I don't know of anyone who has suffered from one of these, but given that infections can trigger the spondy monster, it wouldn't surprise me... Especially if you got a spine in or near a joint, and there are quite a few of those fairly close to the surface in your foot!
Someone I know got bitten on the finger by a kitten and it punctured the joint. The result was several week long stays in hospital with heavy duty doses of IV anti-biotics and a finger that will never be the same again. Haven't seen them in a while, but last I saw they still couldn't straighten their finger at least a year or more on.

Well, there are over 50 triggers for AS and some sea urchin spines do have poisons and infectious agents that could possibly trigger AS in an already susceptible individual.
In truth, whatever agency TRIGGERED the AS, it was probably going to happen eventually, anyway--one trigger or another.
I used to dive and I have had sea urchin spine bits in my heels, but I now know what causes AS and I do not believe MY condition had anything to do with such misadventures.

Not my theory, but some interesting research ... Since it was well over 20 years ago I was diagnosed, the interweb didn't exist !! For me everything kicked off after I jumped from a windsurfer in Malta and landed on a bed of sea urchins. I had hundreds of sea urchine spines broken in each foot !! So a quick google search unearthed some very interesting stuff (see below)... Who knows ! Of the 40 cases of sea urchin spine-related clinical symptoms published to date, only 12 had osteoarticular symptoms. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We studied 12 cases with osteoarticular symptoms seen in Réunion Island from 1994 to 1998. There were nine cases of arthritis and one case each of tenosynovitis, fasciitis, and bursitis. The nine males and three females had an age range of 9 to 50 years.
