Hello, alephknot:

Colitis really cannot be managed with diet; it requires antibiotics in nearly all cases.

Rifaximin is a good antibiotic, specifically targeting the gut and E. coli bacterium nearly always responsible for colitis.

If a specific bacterium has already been identified, it would be easier to treat the colitis, but make an informed decision which antibiotic is best for the subject.

Fasting is far better for colitis.

HEALTH,
John

Best Regards,
John

I think diet can help to some extent with colitis. This study identified some dietary factors that can influence UC -
'Influence of dietary factors on the clinical course of ulcerative colitis: a prospective cohort study' - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1774231/

John is right that antibiotics can be effective in inducing remission in UC. Two meta-analysis found that they were effective

I healed a lot of my UC following a fruit-based diet (similar to 80-10-10, but with green juicing). Check out Dr David Klein, who wrote a great book on healing UC with diet.

Also, avoid high FODMAPs food, eat fruits higher in glucose than fructose, NO MEAT, grains might be inflammatory to him, too.

Make sure he gets a CDSA to see if he has dysbiosis and pancreatic insufficiency.

Another good source of info is Dr Fuhrman, who has an autoimmune protocol...however, I find that most people have the most success on a fruit-based diet. If u want more info, i'll be glad to help!

I agree with TeenyBee on checking out Dr. David Klein! My colitis has really healed itself up this past year eating mostly raw fruits, veggies, greens, "green juices/smoothies", nuts, seeds, NO Grains, No Dairy, No Refined Sugar. I still eat some fish, but was VERY inspired by Dr. David Klein's book http://www.colitis-crohns.com/testimonials.html

I would offer to send you my copy, but already have it on loan to someone, when I get it returned, I can send it to you!

Thanks!
Andrea

I'm now a KICK AS (and Kick IBD) success story!! After going low starch Paleo to heal my gut, I can now eat nearly all starches, grains & foods without inflammation, flare-ups, or pain. I used a modified SCD diet approach (minus dairy! plus cacao ♥). Cheers to healing & thriving again! I blog at http://www.forestandfauna.com/about/
