I have never thought about the "when". My daughters eat theirs for breakfast. I choose to have mine in the evening. I don't know if it matters but now I am very curious. Hope someone has a good answer.

Hey there John,

Regarding probiotic supplements this is what I had read... if you want to have them help with digestion, take with meals. If you want to heal the gut, take between meals.

I eat my yogurt as a snack in the late afternoon. Well before dinner.

Yogurt was never powerful enough for me and / or being allergic to the milk canceled out the benefits of the probiotics.

For me, I had to go to pill form probiotics to see any help from probiotics.

I eat Greek Yogurt or the protein and what probiotic effect I can get. I, too, add a probiotic by recommendation of my dr.

I should have added that above.

I eat sauerkraut for the benefit of probiotics. I eat the yogurt because I love the taste and it is a healthy food... especially in comparison to most foods you can buy in supermarket now.

is that a sauerkraut yogurt?

to those in the UK....do we have that sort of thing here?

is sugar, the type found in soda pop, bad for IBS/sensitive stomachs?

the "sugar" in most UK sodas/fizzy drinks is often derived from corn sugars and heavily supplemented with artificial sweeteners. I'd choose cane sugars every time in preference to corn (though I am biased as corn really messes up my gut). Its also extremely hard to find fizzy drinks without the artificial sweeteners in them - even the non-diet ones. Its not just the sugars though. In general sweetened and flavoured fizzy drinks have way too much bad stuff in them, and are best left alone. I do succumb though, and make a rule not to have any of the mainstream ones and just stick with organic drinks (like the fairtrade ubuntu ones or phoenix, etc) as they have much more basic and nicer ingredients. My current practice is to buy two cans of fairtrade ubuntu cola a week and thats my limit. Another option is to buy sparkling water and add either a squeeze of lemon, or a bit of pure fruit juice or concentrated fruit juice to it.

Bio-K is one of just a few probiotics that has been proved to work. I don't mean to sound like an advertisement, but there have been double blind studies done. I don't have time to look for the results, unfortunately. She also felt that a high quality organic yoghurt was a great way to maintain healthy levels.

Bio-K is a fermented milk product and is, I gather, loaded with probiotics. I used to take it daily. Usually in the morning.

It's not cheap, but not stupidly expensive and you don't have to eat an entire container (as the makers of Bio-K suggest). My naturopath had me on two tablespooons a day, which made one container last three days. She felt that it was such a high quality that it was worth me taking even with a suspected casein sensitivity.

So there you are. My two cents worth. grin

Love and Warm Hugs,

Kat
