That's interesting, I didn't know there was a specific gene related to gout.

This book explains the connection between uric acid and arthritis. It's from 1908, so he doesn't have any reference to AS.

It seems like it's always a good idea to not overdo purines.

I just read the other day that reishi and cordyceps help the body deal with uric acid.

Keeping enough alkalizing minerals, potassium, natrum phosphoricum, in the body help hold the uric acid in solution so that it is excreted and not precipitated where you don't want it to be.

Way out of that nonsense ? Do the spit test. Send to friend out of state, friend repackages package and posts onwards. Bingo. Done and dusted. Oh yes, send friend couple of notes to cover postage - and of course a big time 'thank you'.

I would be very wary of these tests, unless one does them for amusement. Genetic significance testing is , as far i understand, is in its infancy. Take the case of HLA B 27. It is very strongly associated with AS. Yet , those who are HLA B 27 positive don't necessarily have the disease ! So even this strong test, is not a definitive test. From what i understand, the mail order genetic testing has much weaker associations with disease than the example of HLA B 27. So I suppose the chance of wrongly predicting things is high. The other thing is that, the current knowledge these tests provide doesn't really help you to prevent things. Instead, they can only serve to add to worry. For an example, if the tests say you have a predisposition to alzheimers disease, what can you do ? Also, if the tests are wrong, you may end up worrying about something for decades for nothing ! There are however, some tests such as the breast cancer gene, that may be therapeutic in some. i.e. some women may choose to have breast removal surgery if the risk of cancer is very high. I would be interested to hear JROCS view on this, as he usually analyses everything....

To me, its more data.

I'm the kind of person to like as much data as possible, then sort it out.

To me knowledge is power, not something to be feared.

Just to clarify - 23andme are looking for 1000's of SNPs (Single nucleotide polymorphisms) that are known to be associated with disease states.

HLA-B27 is a molecule encoded by a gene of 1000 or so nucleotides and there are currently about 100 sub types of B27 - so that if a person requires their B27 status it can be gotten by any standard pathology lab.

Dx Oct 2006 B27+ undifferentiated spondlyarthropathy (uSpA) with mild sebhorrhoeic dermatitis and mild Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) controlled by NSD since 2007.
