If you want to use this QR code (Quick Response code) just save the image and paste it where you want. You can even print it and use it that way. Coffee cups, T-Shirts etc would all be good for the QR code.

Yesterday, quite out of the blue, a pupil told me that my hands looked arthritic (thanks!). I pondered this overnight and I'm left wondering what arthritic hands look like?! I know my joints get red and hot (that, apparently, is the FM), but I've never noticed them actually swell up (i.e. get bigger).
So, without being reduced to Googling pictures, what do people think arthritic hands look like? With AS, or indeed, any inflammatory arthritis, do you think there are visible signs that other people might notice?

I'd say knobbly knuckles, and bent finger joints, as well as swollen joints. My DIP joints in several fingers are kind of twisted sideways, so I always thing they look fairly obviously arthritic.

My fingers stay mostly bent. My thumbs lay over in the palms of my hands. The tops of my hands are puffy with fluid in the knuckles. My fingers are knobby. The worst thing for me is I can't button or unbutton buttons and I can't pick up small things and bigger things I use both hands. I drop almost everything I pick up. My rheumatologist looked at them last week and asked if I was ready for Biologics again. The PA was standing there shaking her head "No". I didn't do well with them.
My pain was very bad for quite a while but it has let up a lot since most of the damage is done. I still get thumb joint pain.
Take care,

Over the last few months, I've developed my first knot (don't know a better word) on the top knuckle of my left index finger. The pain is never severe, but it is constant and there is an unmistakable bump that was not there before. You can see it the most when placed beside the right index finger. Pain moves around to different joints in my hands constantly, so I expect there will be more where that came from.

Talk to your Rheumatologist about it. The first thing our dr. does is look at our hands. He has sent me to 3 different hand specialists. We were looking for someone to do surgery on my right hands but none of them would. It was too far advanced.
I wish you well.
Oh, what age do you teach? Wondering about an observant student. Must have family member with RA.
