does walking around the grocery store and trader joes qualify for exercise today?
erica,
i used to love breast stroke, but that frog kick always irritated my SI joint, so just be aware of that possibility. maybe it won't bother yours; mine is my achilles heel.
i've been thinking lately that i need to up the yoga and maybe add the band exercises back in (after this august flare) for the same reasons you discuss Erica....lately i hurt myself doing the simplest things...hurt my elbow this week brushing my hair (but not too bad, so its already settled back down)....today i noticed the front of my shoulder enthesis was really irritated; not sure what i did there....also wondering if i focus a bit more on the inner core strengthening, if my SI joint will be so cranky, as it seems anymore....
thinking along the same lines as you are Erica

Spondyloarthropathy, HLAB27 negative Humira (still methylprednisone for flares, just not as often. Aleve if needed, rarely.) LDN/zanaflex/flector patches over SI/ice vits C, D. probiotics. hyaluronic acid. CoQ, Mg, Ca, K. chiro walk, bike no dairy (casein sensitivity), limited eggs, limited yeast (bread)
Sue what is a flare like, I find it hard to understand what it means
I am much better in between flares, and when I flare, worse before humira, but still, the following can / could occur for me:
needing more sleep / increased fatigue dry eyes mouth sores malar rash psoriasis erythema nodosum increased enthesitis increased neck pain increased SI joint pain diarrhea or constipation
in between flares, these symptoms are usually milder

So do you have AS or PsA, do people fuse with PsA aswell as AS
Since I have GI inflammation but not full blown crohn's, psoriasis but not very severe, enthesitis along with bone spurs in my neck and SI joint inflammation but no evidence of fusing:
my rheumy and I have settled on just calling it "spondyloarthropathy".
in the U.S. with my BCBS insurance, we can call it just that and get the humira, so that's what we decided to do.
In my family, fusing doesn't seem to be a part of the illness.
my aunt has a spondyloarthropathy as well, hasn't fused yet, and she's 15 years older than me. she's been dx'ed with psoriatic arthritis, but it could be mixed like mine, but by the time she got a dx (50 years after her symptoms started, age 65), her psoriasis was finally noticeable enough to get a dx. But by then, she needed a walker to get around, so clearly her joints were even worse. But a biologic is helping her as well. Her insurance made her start with remicade, but that didn't help her. She's now on Cimzia now I think (I know its one of the newer ones). She and her doctor had wanted her to start with humira, but her insurance wouldn't allow it; that's too bad, as it worked so well for me, and with us being related, it probably would have worked well for her too. Anyway, finally she's seeing some relief.
As for fusing, I'd look at family history to see if you think you'd fuse. Too, the inflammation itself is bad enough both in symptoms, disfunction, and disability and in overall health. Inflammation is so bad for us overall: heart disease, artery disease, etc.

Yes! Walking while shopping is still walking!
Sue, I've been making a point to move around gently throughout the day.
It seems that the "remission" I'm in is not complete, but I'll take it. My joints aren't constantly aggravated, and I'm enjoying that as long as it lasts! Still have the sick feeling, but only 1/4 of what it was this time last year.
That "gentle" yoga video I posted hurt my shoulders. So I found another gentler one. I also like Qi Gong for gentle movement when my feet aren't aggravated.
Here's a REAL restorative yoga video:
Yesterday I walked to the pool and swam 1/2 mile. It's nice to be able to walk on my feet these days. I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts.
I've taken over the lawn mowing duties for the household, and that's been fun. It' kind hurts my mid back, but I'm going ot keep at it to see if I can build up those muscles.

walked a mile in 30 minutes to go see the ospreys. when we got close enough, 3 birds were actually flying around, so junior must now be a fledgling.
the road was very rocky, they put new rocks on it to prevent the erosion (its a dirt service road back to the cell tower that the ospreys have used as nesting site for several years now.
two things came to mind as i was "walkin' down this rocky road"...
the first thought was ice cream...rocky road ice cream....resisting that temptation....so far, so good.
the second thought was the song started playing in my head, so now listening to Bad Company...first "Ready for Love" with that lyric: "walkin' down this rocky road" and now the rest of the album.
that's calorie free
