Can you speculate or report what Jon did or stopped doing that allowed or promoted his GI tract healing?

To be honest, the answer really is just to eliminate starch completely (and dairy in his case) and allow time for the GI tract to heal naturally.

That may seem too simple but that was all he did. Whenever we tried adding things to help heal the gut and speed up the process he either experienced no change or else it flared him up. We tried low dose antibiotics for a few months and that did reduce his symptoms but ended up creating candida problems that then took about 1 year to get rid of. Candida makes the condition of your gut worse so that wasn't a good direction for him. For a short time we tried aloe vera juice, probiotics and L-glutamine powder and few other supplements, all with no noticeable benefits but no negative effects either.

What worked for him was just to stick STRICTLY to absolutely NO starch and minimal dairy. He didn't and doesn't take any supplements except a Vitamin B complex when he remembers. He became a "starch nazi" as you've refered to in another post. That really was and is the answer.

Amazing it can be so simple, isn't it?

Tehehehe, , I picked up the term "fringe foods" from Tim anyway so you can blame him!

Congratulations! That definately gives me hope. Sometimes I get frustrated because my symptoms seem to come and go but I think it's just going to take some time for my body to heal and if I really think about it I'll find something that was irritating me (like just recently I found raisins were causing me pain for some reason). It feels like I've been on this diet for a really long time but then when I think about it I only started this diet in November so it's only been about 4 months. In which time I do have to say I've seen improvement. First of all I went from taking 6 asacol pills for my IBD down to 0 pills. I also don't feel sick to my stomach all the time and my flare ups seem to be less intense and don't last as long. Also I've noticed in the morning I'm not hunched over in pain anymore. I agree with what you said "any progress is a good sign" and I think the key is to know it is going to take a while to completely heal. I also liked what you said about "Stick with it and in TIME you will get there!" That is so encouraging as sometimes I just want to be pain free and have my IBD completely under control. Also hearing that it took Jon 9 months to give up the NSAIDS and still had low pain makes me feel good that in 4 months I'm only taking Celebrex every once in a great while when I have a flare up. I have taken 1 Celebrex in the last month with a flare up which use to be 2 or 3 to get out of a flare which occured once every week or two. I'm going to start trying to eat dessicated coconut and coconut oil like you mentioned. Was Jon eating this with the coconut muffins or just coconut by itself? I'm guessing he didn't eat the coconut oil by itself as that might not taste that great.

Also does Jon drink any alcohol and if so what is he able to tolerate? I've heard some can handle dry wine. I've noticed beer bothers me like I've heard with others here. Also for those that can handle wine, what kind of wine seems to be safe (merlot, chardonney, zinfendel, etc)? I tried some Kendal Jackson Chardonney and it didn't seem to be that bad but I only tried it once and I'm going to have to try it again to be sure. The only thing that kind of sucks about this is if it's at a bar I have to watch others eat all kinds of stuff I could eat before but now know I will never be able to eat again (unless of course I break the diet).

I have to say it is great to have a group of people to talk to that are going through the same thing I am! I want to thank everyone here for your support! I also want to say everyone here on this diet has awesome willpower as this diet is a very difficult to stick to! Also Chelsea you are amazing to have been so supportive of Jon throughout all of this. Jon is VERY lucky to have you!

Well, your progress so far is great! You're doing really well.

Jon's been eating coconut muffins every day for the last few months made with ground up dessicated coconunt. You can buy good quality coconut oil over the internet as I seem to remember you had a few problems with the muffins worsening your symptoms? Perhaps cooking with high quality coconut oil or taking it like a supplement might be easier?

Jon has had beer and wine and also spirits with fizzy drink on occasion with no problems. But he is not a big drinker so he will just have one or maybe two beers or one glass of wine once every couple of months. So I'm not sure if drinking more would cause problems or not. Shouldn't from the starch point of view but I'm not sure about tummy troubles.

Thanks for your response Chelsea. I narrowed it down to the eggs bothering me in the muffins but my stomach is doing much better now so I'm thinking of reintroducing them into my diet (at least the egg whites for now). I got some coconut macaroons from the health food store that only have coconut, honey and egg whites and so far so good. I also found some organic lunch meat from Applegate Farms that doesn't have any additives (at least the turkey doesn't) and I have absolutely no problems with it! I just found out after eating the chicken (same brand) and having an upset stomach that it had potato starch added. Sneaky starches! I'm going to just stick with the turkey from now on. I also tried Soy Dream Butter Pecan ice cream which doesn't bother me where before pecans use to bother me. I have a feeling as my stomach continues to get better I'll be able to add more and more foods (non-starch of course) to my diet. I'll be happy when I can add red meat back in as I miss the taste of a nice steak or even a burger.

I'm pretty much the same as Jon, I don't drink much alcohol either but a drink every once every couple months when I'm out with my friends or my wife is nice. Also like Jon it's usually 1 or 2 beers or 1 or 2 at the most glasses of wine. I had problems with beer in the beginning of this diet but it might have just been that my stomach was so messed up that it was very sensitive. I'm going to try it again. I'll let you know how it goes.

Hi Jeff,

If you are having issues with raisons and other similar foods that have more sugar, you may have candida in the GI tract as well. In my first year when I began eating more dried fruits this popped up on me twice. I used Oregano (sp) oil (same as the spice) and garlic to help clear up my issues. The oil is pretty strong stuff (taste).

Over long term probiotics and yogurt with probiotics helped keep my GI tract in better shape.

Just some food for thought.

Hope you continue to improve, keep up the good work.

Tim

It is amazing! That's soo good for you guys! How did you tested/confirmed Candida and how did you get rid of it?

I'm over 2 years on NSD but have not been able to achieve remission although don't take NSAIDs.

Thanks Tim. I'll look into Oregano (sp) oil. What does the "sp" stand for and how much do you take? I make the SCD yoghurt and eat about 3 to 4 spoonfuls every morning. I was eating a bowl each morning but it seemed to bother me a little when I had too much. Is there any symptoms I should look out for with Candida? I've never had it before.

Hi Jeff,

I was unsure of the spelling and therefore added the (sp) to infere I was unsure I had spelled correctly.

Regards to candida... it can be aggravated by eating large amounts of sugar (their food source)... I had flares and AS was getting worse.. but looking at the food I was extremely strict with NSD, but was also eating a lot of sugary foods. I cut back on sugar and did the oregano oil.

Only other symptom I know of to look for is coloration of toe nails.. they can be a bit brownish. You may want to google for other symptoms. I have a book, Alternative Guide to Arthritis by Zamperon (sp) that is good in discussing, but book is packed yet from moving.

Hope this helps,

Tim
