There are advantages of water fluoridation. Mostly dental in nature. I agree that too much is a bad thing and where that limit lies is a bit foggy right now and I think the amount they allow in water should be reduced.

I have no clue if the type of fluoride matters.

BTW.. there can be more fluoride in well water than in some cities drinking water since it is an abundant naturally occurring element. I have seen well water test very high for fluoride.

See point #7. Peruse the other points at your discretion.

Quackwatch? Really? That guy (supposedly a doctor) that writes from his basement and is funded by one of the major insurers, pharma companies, or someone else in the medical industrial complex. He's been shot down in court at least once that I've read about.

I guess we will believe what we want. You are entitled to your beliefs. I'm entitled to mine.

Read the CDC site. Better info from a neutral party.

Claim 1 on your site is misleading. Many countries in Europe, Japan, and india have added fluoride to the salt rather than the water since they have a very different water distribution system than we have. Just like we add iodine to the salt they add fluoride

AS to #7 If i live in a house built before 1946 that may be a problem smile

Simply put I have no problem with small amounts of fluoride in water and real research shows it is safe and effective in low doses. The trick is how much do we get and how much is too much. There are some unanswered questions on Fluoride in water and the quantity we should have. I like the Europe model of salt as you can then avoid it if you want to by buying salt with or without.

The better choice here is to make it available to consumers in something like salt but also let those who want to avoid it have that option. Unfortunately putting it in water makes it hard to opt out of and I struggle with that.

US government says flouride causing splotchy teeth..

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110108/ap_on_he_me/us_med_fluoride_levels

I really fail to see any benefits in floruidation of water.. The only people I can think would benefit from this type of thing are very powerful people around the world.

it looks like toothpaste itself is one of the biggest contributors of Fluoride, switching to a natural brand if you haven't already a good idea yes

i used a toothpaste for about a year that contained no fluoride, unbeknownst to me during that time. i had just assumed all toothpaste was fluorinated. normally i do not have new cavities as an adult, just replace the old fillings. well during that time i had several new cavities. i guess i need fluoride in my toothpaste. but if we don't swallow it, how much is getting into our systems. drinking it in our water on the other hand........

megan, that would be so nice if you could find some big smoking gun that you could eliminate and feel better heart

apparently you don't need to swallow fluoride in order to absorb it!

from FAN Fluoride Action Network that Jaybird posted:

3) Contrary to previous belief, fluoride has minimal benefit when swallowed. When water fluoridation began in the 1940s and '50s, dentists believed that fluoride needed to be swallowed in order to be most effective. This belief, however, has now been discredited by an extensive body of modern research (1).

According to the Centers for Disease Control, fluoride's "predominant effect is posteruptive and topical" (2). In other words, any benefits that accrue from the use of fluoride, come from the direct application of fluoride to the outside of teeth (after they have erupted into the mouth) and not from ingestion. There is no need, therefore, to expose all other tissues to fluoride by swallowing it.

I agree that a certain amount of fluoride is good for us. We evolved on this planet with small amounts in the spring water we drink. The problem is, here the city water is often fluoridated 10x higher than Mother nature's "recommendation".

Megan - the antis of F. in water have just lost a big case in the UK! Now even MORE areas in the UK will have fluoride added to their drinking water.

Am horrified - who is sitting in whose back pocket, 'chink chink' all the waay to the bank! TG one 'can' purchase a de-fluoridation apparatus, but, at what cost?

I refuse to even use fluoridated toothpaste, no way, thanks. Enough additives in our food chain without adding to em. Got to be *Forever vigilant. Sheesh.

Wrote in to Medical News Today - my opinion is accepted. In my meanderings found this: HEALTH EFFECTS: Fluoride/Arthritis http://www.fluoridealert.org/health/bone/fluorosis/arthritis/

Very interesting.
