A little blurb on teh type of Fluoride used in US water systems

These compounds were chosen for their solubility, safety, availability, and low cost.[31] A 1992 census found that, for U.S. public water supply systems reporting the type of compound used, 63% of the population received water fluoridated with fluorosilicic acid, 28% with sodium fluorosilicate, and 9% with sodium fluoride.[34] The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has developed recommendations for water fluoridation that specify requirements for personnel, reporting, training, inspection, monitoring, surveillance, and actions in case of overfeed, along with technical requirements for each major compound used.[35]

Seems most US systems do not use Sodium Fluoride (at least as of this census). I found out that my city does not use sodium fluoride

The addition of Fluoride into toothpaste in the 70's eliminated much of the benefit we saw in adding fluoride to the water. There probably is not much need to do it anymore frankly at least I thought that until I read this one.

A side blurb on water Fluoridation that is a chuckle (same source)

U.S. data from 1974–1992 indicate that when water fluoridation is introduced into a community, there are significant decreases in the number of employees per dental firm and the number of dental firms. The data suggest that some dentists respond to the demand shock by moving to non-fluoridated areas and by retraining as specialists.[73] U.S. children born 1957–1964 who grew up in fluoridated areas have earned significantly more as adults than children who did not; this effect is heavily concentrated among girls from poorer families, consistent with the hypothesis that the effect is due to consumer and employer discrimination in favor of women with physically more attractive teeth.[74]

Hi Megan, yes, it's called Fluoride Toxicity, I posted an extensive threade awhile back about a village in China, if I remember correctly, where app. 50 men developed AS, CDC & WHO said, "What are the odds, no way!", so they investigated and it was not AS, it was fluoride exposure, I don't remember the neme of my post but I'll look for it and try to paste it here for you but I'm not sure what I titled the thread...it included photos of the men and detailed medical histories and findings. The only time I would say one should consider this possibility is if they are DXed with AS and have NO family history of any of the auto-immune diseases, if there is a family history, then it's not likely to be Fluoride Toxicity... hugss I found it, it was 3 years ago and it was Bridget's thread actually but I posted the following link, it is a fascinating article...I hope it helps, Megan... rainbow

Megan if u r worried about this u can have yr fluoride level checked. The big worries for getting too much is from well water with high fluoride levels and drinking certain teas . City treated drinking water could add to the problem but is probably to low to cause it alone. Here is a case study from pub med

This doesn't sound good at all either (personally, I don't care what the dilution is). Here are the Material Safety Data Sheet and the International Chemical Safety Card for fluorosilcic acid.

Quote:
Corrosive - causes burns. Harmful by ingestion, inhalation and through skin contact. May be fatal if swallowed. May cause serious eye damage.

MSDS

Quote:
Ingestion: Burning sensation. Abdominal cramps. Vomiting. Shock or collapse.

Internatonal Chemical Safety Card (from cdc.gov)

I'm guessing the second chemical listed in that wiki cite isn't any better than the bookends.

Kind Regards,
Jay

Hi Driz! We didn't even bother to test my fluoride levels now, since I've been avoiding fluoride. I wish there was a test that could show chronic exposure over time - or perhaps when I was having acute episodes. It's ironic that it causes excessive thirst. There were times I was drinking gallons of water a day and I had no clue I was just making myself worse. Of course, once I was rehydrated with IV saline, I'd get better for a bit.

I read about the tea connection awhile ago - I'm sure that didn't help me much either. frown

Thanks for the link

HI Megan

yes it is an interesting topic. Most cases seem to be from Natural fluoride when people use well drinking water. I have no doubt there are a few people who have a lower tolerance or multiple risk factors that could react at lower levels then what we read about with this fluoride problem.

In most of the case stories I dug up, the people felt better and the problem cleared up when their fluoride levels dropped to low levels. (understanding permanent damage won't go away)
