RA is easier to diagnose. Got the 'rheumatoid' factor, there aint no AS factor... Not that ALL RA will show the rheumatoid in first instance, but most always. Least that's my understanding of it.
Rheumatoid factor (blood test) and the presentation of the case V. AS aint got nowt much 'typical' about...

Yeh, seems to be easier to dx. I know one of the first doctors I went to kept feeling my hands and feet for swelling, and finally I had to tell him I didn't have RA. Then went on to list my spondy symptoms (enthesitis, GI inflammation, etc); he acted like he'd never heard of such a thing......
They also kept testing my blood for RF, ANA, etc.
Oh well, that's all water under the bridge.
I just wish they were trained in more than RA.....or at least it seems like that's all many know about......

Seeing the drugs that the rheumies around here prescribe the most, makes me really see how many more RA patients there are. From this data you can not really draw conclusions about the patient population as a whole. Keep in mind that ProPublica's data only includes prescriptions filled by Medicare Part D subscribers. That is a relatively small subset of Medicare patients as a whole. These patients tend to be older and sicker then the general population - and older and sicker then the broader base of the individual physician's practice. Medicare Part D also tends to be a bit more restrictive in what it covers compared to traditional insurance. This is a decent reference tool IF you are a Medicare Part D patient. Is is a lot less relevant if you are a patient with traditional health insurance.
