Hi All,

I went on a sugar (plus fruit) and carb diet this week due to having symptoms of Candida.

4 days in I grabbed a black coffee and all of a sudden, heart palps, nausea, short breath, anxiety etc etc.

It was bad timing because I had to jump on a helicopter for a photo shoot.

Is this hypoglycaemia? Or the Caffeine fix or both?

How do I go 2-3 weeks on sugar free without compromising my body.

Cheers,

Hi,

I'm guessing that your body is in such an early stage of a Ketogenic diet that various triggers can/will put you "off balance".

With time things will even out, and as long as you substitute sugar-fuel for fat and protein-fuel, you body should be able to transition, and still let you keep up with work, and the rest of life!

Good to read up a little on others' experience with Ketosis, or near Ketosis. One quick Google-find:

All the best,
Kristin

Hi, Kiteboarder:

Probably diet-induced (temporary) hypoglycemia: Caffeine is implicated in type 2 diabetes; it causes release of insuulin by somehow tricking the adrenals.

In my introduction to fasting I suggest avoiding caffeine for that reason--it can make us hungry, also and best not to have withdrawals from this substance, too.

For four years I avoided all sugars (including fruit).

As someone else mentioned, the trick is getting your body into a ketogenic state. You're no longer burning sugars and carbs for energy, so you need to make sure you're eating enough healthy fats/oils and enough non-starchy carbs. This was a big revelation for me.

The first month is the hardest. The next couple of months took a bit of adjusting to figure out what I could eat or what I couldn't eat. Nowadays, it's easy and second nature. I have great energy all the time. Even though I have introduced some fruits into my diets, I'd say for most of the year I still go sugar free. I just like the way I feel when I'm sugar free.

I no longer have any desire to snack. The only time I get hunger pangs if I miss one of my meals. Three meals a day, that's it.

Good luck!

Hey FormerFoodie, can you give us some ideas on what your typical diet might look like?

what I can eat on the diet (click here) -- my blog -- contact me (PM is broken)
