Good folks and rotten folks alike can say some wickedly hurtful things out of frustration. I don't know where in that spectrum your son falls. AS does bring with it a whole boatload full of family frustrations but unless your son is still 16 he sure needs to grow up fast and absorb some wisdom from somewhere.
I'm glad he apologized but hopefully he would be wise enough in the future to never tread where comments like that are passed. They don't fade away fast and often they don't fade away ever.
If he does want wisdom, my colleague Bruno is a wonderful teacher of wisdom to the disrespectful.
