today hubby and i took a bike ride: 10 miles, 50 minutes

along the erie canal path. toward the end of the day, so the bugs and thus the birds were out coming back.

on the way back:

first we spotted a kingfisher, which was kind of special, don't see them very often.

then a kingbird.

then a green heron, which is always cool to see; the bright orange legs are the give away, as they are about the same size and shape and coloring when not right close up as a least bittern, but the leg coloring is the obvious marker.

then we got to a spot where there were about a dozen or so red wing black birds up in the tree tops, flying around eating bugs, the canal being a great place for bug catching, so a great place to see birds.

we stopped to get a closer look at the other birds and noticed a male and female scarlet tanager

and a nondescript little yellow warbler of some kind up in the tree (not close enough to see any identifiable markings.

all in all a good day for a bike ride and a great day for unexpected bird watching. and best of all, the bike ride helped me feel better for a little while at least.
